ELEVATING FILM

Drone Video Production Services for Film & TV

From briefing to broadcast-ready footage

As a video producer, you know that aerial imagery makes the difference between a good production and an unforgettable one. The only question is: which type of drone fits your project, and how do you ensure quality, safety, and compliance with European regulations at the same time?

At Drone Department, we have been working on professional film sets across Europe since 2006. From the Netherlands, we support production companies, broadcasters, and agencies with a complete range of drone video production services. In this article, we walk through our workflow, our specialized offerings, the EASA EU Specific regulations that you as a client will encounter, and provide concrete tips to get the most out of your drone day.

Our workflow: from first conversation to final delivery

A successful drone day begins long before a propeller starts spinning. At Drone Department, we use a structured workflow that makes your production smoother, safer, and ultimately more beautiful.

1. Briefing and quote

Every project starts with a personal conversation. We discuss your shot list, the location, and any challenges. Based on this, you receive a clear quote including the proposed drone platform, the team composition, and a realistic schedule. No surprises afterwards.

2. Permits and safety

Drone Department holds a full EASA EU Specific drone operator license (registration number NLDoyhg6yl91zgtj). This means we are permitted to fly throughout Europe in scenarios where most drone companies are not allowed. Think of:

  • Flying within 25 meters of people or buildings on a closed film set
  • Operations in civil and military CTRs, including Schiphol
  • EVLOS (Extended Visual Line of Sight) and FPV missions
  • Night flights and flying in low visibility

We handle all necessary waivers and CTR applications so you can focus entirely on the creative side. Want to know more about European drone regulations and our license? Check our dedicated page on this topic.

3. On-location Production

On production day, we typically work as a solo operator for maximum flexibility and speed. For projects that demand extreme precision or complex cinematography, we deploy a dual-operator setup (pilot and camera operator). This flexible approach ensures that we always offer the most efficient solution for your specific production.

4. Post-production and delivery

After the shoot, we stabilize and color-correct all FPV footage so it fits seamlessly into your final edit. You receive broadcast-ready footage in your desired format, including Apple ProRes, CinemaDNG, or RAW files when necessary.

Our drone service offering: which type fits your production?

Not every production requires the same platform. A TV commercial has different requirements than a Formula 1 recording or an indoor fly-through for an architecture firm. Below you will find an overview of our specializations.

Service Ideal for Camera Speed
Drone Pilot Teams Speelfilms, commercials RED, ARRI, Sony Venice Medium
Cinema Drones Series, real estate, events Zenmuse X9 8K Medium
Indoor & Fly-Through FPV Museums, showrooms, architecture GoPro, DJI Action Low to medium
Live Broadcast & Events Sports, festivals, ceremonies Various (live feed) Variable
Action & Motorsports F1, motocross, stunts GoPro, Sony ZV-E10 Up to 200 km/h
Custom Drones Special payloads and setups To preference To preference
Tip for producers: Not sure which platform is right? Feel free to contact our team. We are happy to advise you on which drone setup best fits your shot list, location, and budget.

Cinema Drone Pilot Teams

For the most demanding productions, Drone Department offers specialized cinema drone pilot teams that fly RED Komodo, ARRI, or Sony Venice cameras on custom frames. This is where cinematographic precision and piloting skill meet. Think of feature films, national advertising campaigns, and music videos where every frame must look perfect.

Indoor and Fly-Through FPV

An indoor FPV drone floats effortlessly through doorways, up stairs, and through entire interiors in one uninterrupted take. With propeller guards, these micro-drones can be safely deployed near people and fragile objects. The result is a dynamic, immersive experience that cannot be achieved with any other platform.

Action and Motorsports

Our high-speed FPV racing drones reach top speeds of 200 km/h and effortlessly track cars, motorcycles, and athletes. We have contributed to shoots at the Zandvoort circuit and for brands such as Tag Heuer, Toyota, and Suzuki. View our projects for examples.

EU Specific drone regulations: what you as a client need to know

European drone rules have been significantly tightened in recent years by EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). As a video producer hiring a drone team, it's good to know what to look out for. Because not every drone company is allowed to fly just anywhere.

Three categories of drone use

EASA distinguishes three operational categories:

  1. Open category - for hobbyists and very simple commercial flights. Maximum 120 meters height, always within line of sight, not above crowds.
  2. Specific category - for professional operations that fall outside standard rules. This requires a Light UAS Operator Certificate (LUC) or Operational Authorization. This is the category in which Drone Department operates.
  3. Certified category - for drones that carry similar risks to manned aviation (e.g. passenger transport).
Important for producers: When you hire a drone company, always ask for their operator registration number and their Operational Authorization. Any company claiming to be allowed to fly in CTRs, above events, or at night must be able to prove this in writing. At Drone Department, you can find this on our drone regulations page.

What our EU Specific license means for you

Because Drone Department operates under an EASA EU Specific operator license, you as a client benefit from several concrete advantages:

  • We are permitted to fly in locations where many other companies are not allowed (airports, city centers, events)
  • We have a documented safety management system, which covers your production legally
  • Our permits are valid in all EU member states, useful for international co-productions
  • We handle CTR applications and coordinate with local air traffic control, so you don't have to do it yourself

Practical tips for your next production with a drone team

After hundreds of shoot days on sets across Europe, we have learned several lessons that we are happy to share with you. These tips will help you get the most out of your production.

Plan the drone day around the light

The most beautiful aerial shots are created around the golden hour, the first and last hour of sunlight of the day. Preferably plan your drone slots during these moments. This is especially true for cinema drone shots with the DJI Inspire 3, where the Zenmuse X9 camera with dual native ISO (800/4000) delivers stunning results even in low light.

Communicate your shot list in advance

The more detailed your shot list, the more efficiently we can fly. Mention not only the type of shot (orbit, tracking, reveal), but also the desired mood, pace, and whether there is interaction with actors or vehicles. This allows us to prepare the right flight plan and make optimal use of the available flight time.

Take the weather into account

Drones are sensitive to wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Our cinema drones (such as the DJI Inspire 3) are wind-resistant up to 15 m/s, but in stronger winds, image quality may decrease. We actively monitor the weather and advise you well in advance if conditions pose a risk.

Reserve sufficient setup time

Count on at least 30 to 45 minutes of setup time before the first flight takes place. We use this time for checking equipment, calibrating compasses, testing the live video link, and final coordination of the shot list with the director. This ensures the shoot itself runs smoothly and without interruptions.

Optional: Dual-operator service

For the most demanding projects, we offer a dual-operator workflow. Here, the pilot focuses entirely on the flight path, while the camera operator independently controls the framing and gimbal movements. This makes extremely complex shots possible — such as fast tracking shots with independent camera movement — that are simply not achievable solo.

In Short

Choosing the right drone team for your production doesn't have to be complicated. At Drone Department, we combine 18 years of experience on professional film sets with a fully certified EU Specific drone operator license.

Whether you are looking for smooth cinema shots with a DJI Inspire 3, lightning-fast FPV footage for a motorsport event, or an immersive indoor fly-through: Drone Department is ready to take your production to the next level.
