Indoor FPV Drone and Fly-Through Video Productions

Dynamic one-take tours through buildings and locations

Imagine: a camera that floats smoothly through a doorway, glides up a staircase, flies straight through an atrium, and shoots back out into daylight. All in one uninterrupted take. That is the power of an indoor FPV fly-through, and it is one of the most requested drone recordings of recent years.

At Drone Department, we specialize in this type of dynamic fly-through video. Whether it's a museum, a car showroom, a factory, or a hotel lobby: our micro FPV drones are small enough to fit through anywhere and safe enough to fly close to people and fragile objects. In this article, we discuss how it works, what equipment we use, what you should look for in preparation, and how EU regulations apply.

How does an indoor FPV fly-through work?

An indoor fly-through is essentially an uninterrupted camera movement through a space, flown by an experienced FPV pilot who sees the entire path in first person (First Person View) via an FPV goggle. Unlike a traditional drone, the pilot steers the drone manually, without GPS stabilization, which gives full creative freedom over speed, altitude, and direction.

The production process step by step

  1. Site visit: we view the space, measure doorways and ceilings, and determine the ideal flight path.
  2. Route planning: together with the director, we determine the exact trajectory, including highlights, speed changes, and any interactions with people.
  3. Practice flights: we perform several test flights to perfect the path and adjust the timing to any actors or models in the frame.
  4. Recording: the final takes are flown, often 5 to 10 times, so you can choose from the best version.
  5. Post-production: stabilization, color correction, and any speed ramping are applied for the final result.

Equipment and safety: micro-drones with propeller guards

The drones we use for indoor fly-throughs are completely different from the large cinema drones we use outside. These are compact, lightweight micro FPV drones, often no larger than a palm, specifically built for this purpose.

Feature Indoor FPV Micro Drone Standard Cinema Drone
Weight 150 - 350 grams 3.5 - 10+ kg
Propeller guards Yes, standard No
Camera GoPro, DJI Action, Insta360 Zenmuse X9, RED, ARRI
GPS stabilization No (manual) Yes
Speed Low to average Average
Application area Indoor, narrow spaces Outdoor, open spaces

Safety measures

Safety is always paramount at Drone Department, even for indoor operations. Our micro-drones are equipped with:

  • Fully enclosed propeller guards: protect both the drone and bystanders and furniture in case of unexpected contact
  • Soft motor settings: limited power that ensures that any collision causes minimal damage
  • Lightweight construction: at 150-350 grams, the kinetic energy on impact is negligibly small
Tip for location managers: An indoor fly-through requires a tidy path. Ensure that loose objects, curtains, or cables hanging in the flight path are removed in advance. The cleaner the path, the smoother the result.

Applications: where do producers use indoor FPV drones?

The application area of indoor FPV has grown enormously in recent years. Where it was once a niche for real estate videos, we now see it in almost every sector.

Popular applications

  • Architecture and real estate: dynamic tours through buildings, new construction projects, and hotel resorts that immerse potential buyers or guests
  • Car brands and showrooms: smooth reveals of new models, where the drone flies around and through the car
  • Museums and exhibitions: immersive tours that give the visitor a unique perspective
  • Events and festivals: one-off fly-throughs through a built set, backstage areas, or a full stadium
  • Behind-the-scenes: dynamic BTS videos for social media that show the production from an entirely new perspective
  • Restaurants and hospitality: atmospheric fly-throughs that bring the interior to life

EU regulations for indoor FPV operations

A common misconception is that indoor drone use falls outside European regulations. That is partially correct: EASA regulations primarily apply to operations in open airspace. However, as soon as you fly in a semi-open space (think of a stadium with an open roof, a courtyard, or a hall with large doors), the regulations do indeed apply.

At Drone Department, we always operate under our EASA EU Specific company license (NLDoyhg6yl91zgtj), even for indoor projects. This guarantees:

  • A documented safety management system for every operation
  • Insurance that also covers indoor drone use
  • Certified pilots trained in indoor FPV flights
  • Clear communication protocols with the location manager and production crew
Important for producers: Even for fully indoor shoots, we ask you to inform the location manager and arrange written permission. We provide a flight plan and risk analysis, so everyone on set knows what's going to happen.

In Short

An indoor FPV fly-through is one of the most impactful visual tools you can use for your production. With compact micro-drones, propeller guards, and an experienced FPV pilot from Drone Department, you bring every interior to life in an uninterrupted, dynamic take that cannot be realized with any other platform.
