Open Category Drone Rules (A1, A2, A3)

What applies to recreational pilots, hobbyists, and standard drone operators in Portugal?

  • Maximum altitude is 120 meters AGL in uncontrolled airspace.
  • Aerial photography and video recording in Portugal requires prior authorization from the military authority (AAN).
  • Operations over military firing ranges (Alcochete, Beja) and CTRs are prohibited in Open.
  • Flights in nature reserves require authorization from ICNF.
  • Night flights are strictly prohibited in the Open Category.
Commercial filming or operating outside Open rules? Filming in populated urban centers, at night, within controlled CTR airspace, or with full-frame cinema drones is strictly prohibited in Open and legally requires an EASA Specific authorization.
