Open Category Drone Rules (A1, A2, A3)

What applies to recreational pilots, hobbyists, and standard drone operators in Switzerland?

  • Maximum altitude is 120 meters AGL in uncontrolled airspace.
  • Strict 5-kilometer buffer zone around all civilian and military runways, Waffenplätze (Thun), and heliports without Skyguide authorization.
  • Strict no-fly zones in military tactical live-fire sectors (Axalp, Payerne), glacier summits, and wildlife protection areas.
  • Third-party liability insurance covering at least 1 million CHF is mandatory.
  • Switzerland enforces EASA UAS regulations via bilateral agreements.
Commercial filming or operating outside Open rules? Filming in populated urban centers, at night, within controlled CTR airspace, or with full-frame cinema drones is strictly prohibited in Open and legally requires an EASA Specific authorization. See how Drone Department executes these flights with full compliance.
